Out of my element…….. at the El Rey Theater

My brother is a “nomadic musician”. This means that he plays music whenever and wherever he can. Being that he is in 5 different bands, I am constantly invited to rock and roll shows. And although staying out late in a club with more people than the building can handle and music that is over amplified is not my idea of a good time, every once in a while I do go to see him play.

This last Wednesday he had a show at the El Rey in Los Angeles. His band ( the Singularity ) was opening up for the Pinker Tones. I figured that being the middle of the week the show wouldn’t be that crowded and I was right! Of course I packed my camera so that I could shoot during the performance. Apparently at this venue they do not allow cameras unless you have a “Press Pass”. Lucky for me that I was a guest of the band and my brother had already secured me a pass. I felt really cool being one of only 3 people to have cameras inside.

This feeling helped me a lot since I was completely out of my element photography wise. If you look through any of my other posts you will see that I generally shoot cars and on rare occasions people ( with or without cars ). These photos are usually taken during the day at a family gathering or at car shows. Concert photography is a totally different situation. It’s dark and the stage lighting is constantly changing. I found that I could get good pictures using my flash, but they lacked the concert feel. So I put away my kit lens with the maximum aperture of f3.5 and only used my 50mm lens which has a max aperture of f1.8 . My strategy was to stay close to the stage and focus on taking portraits of the band members during the performance.

And as with everything that I shoot, it was a learning experience. Hope you enjoy the photos. Also, be sure to check out the band on Facebook !   http://www.facebook.com/thesingularitymusic

Animal pics

I was asked to take some pics of the animals at work for a few enlarged prints to be used as decoration around the facility. Sometimes I feel like I end up over-complicating things sometimes by trying to adjust every possible setting on the camera for some of the simplest shots. Either way, I ended up with a few shots that I am happy about.

Practice, practice, practice!

I haven’t been shooting much lately due to a hectic work schedule. Fortunately I was able to shoot a bit at work last month. Because one of the rescued cats was being transferred to another facility, some of the people who worked with her on a regular basis wanted to take portraits with her before she left. I did snap a few shots of the cat by herself.

I also decided to begin taking classes at the prestigious University of “You Tube”, LOL. My first project was to shoot things falling into water/liquid.

I gotta keep shooting……….

A night out in Hollywood

I went to an art show last night at the Known Gallery in Hollywood. The artists featured were well known graffitti artists from the area. I arrived expecting a decent amount of people to be in attendance, but when I actually walked in it was one of the most crowded events that I had ever attended. The art was amazing, complicated and colorful.

As I exited the gallery, I noticed a smaller gallery across the street. The Norm Maxwell gallery was packed too. I was unable to really get a good look at the great paintings on exhibit due to the live spoken word and poetry being performed. The poetry and music from local young artists was more comprehendable to me. And even though I wasn’t able to see all of the art on display, I was blown away by the few paintings that I did see. All in all, I did enjoy myself out and about with all the “cool kids” in Hollywood last night.

Still need alot more practice

I’ve had multiple opportunities to shoot at clubs during band performances due to my brother playing in 3 separate bands. The only problem is, is that the majority of the shows he plays are during the week and usually late at night. I was fortunate enough to be a part of a jr rock band show on the Sunset strip oin Hollywood for work. It gave me a chance to practice shooting. I obviously still need more experience with this type of shoot, but I feel like I got a few good shots.

Gotta post something

Pictures, pictures and more pictures! My brother has been bugging me about seeing the picture that I’ve been shooting since mid-December. I have been taking the camera everywhere and photographing everything, but haven’t posted any of them anywhere. So here are a few of the many photographs from the past month or so.

Big Eric’s ’66 El Dorado

With the January halfway gone, I set up my first photo shoot with a good friend from the Cadillac Kings car club. He has a nice collection of top-notch Cadillacs, but this 1966 El Dorado is his current favorite. And once you see this car up close, you’ll see why. I only hope that these pictures capture the true beauty of this fine automobile.

Now I photograph cars all of the time, but generally they are all in a group setting. (at shows, BBQ’s and car club meetings).Shooting in these types of settings limits the angles that you can actually get since there are other vehicles parked in such close proximity of each other.

Shooting with a single vehicle gives me free reign of which angles that I can shoot from. It’s also quite a bit more difficult if you are only used to the standard car show angles. (front, 3/4 shot, rear, or any of these 3 in an elevated or lowered stance) These are the easiest ways to get the typical “Good” car pictures. Don’t get me wrong. I still use these angles with all of my shoots. I just try to make a conscious effort to get a photograph of something that people have seen before, but capture from an angle that they’ve never seen it.

Majestics New Years Picnic 2012

My new years resolution for 2012 is to take more pictures. This is something that I really think that I can stick to. I thought I should hit the ground running with this so I went to the Majestics New Years Day Picnic. The Majestics car club is a world-wide lowrider club that I belive began in Southern California in the mid to late 1970′s. And when any of their chapters throw a party, every other lowrider car club in the area attends. This was my first time attending this picnic and I was blown away. I’d say that there were over 300 cars (and I heard that it was smaller than last year).  And although I spent over four and a half hours walking around and taking pictures, I didn’t even get to see half of the cars in attendance. This tells me that I need to take a different approach to photographing at these events. Here are a few pics from what I was able to get…..

Cadillac Ranch

On the cross-country road trip that I was on a week ago, I had the opportunity to see some of the landmarks along route 66. And as a classic Cadillac owner, Cadillac Ranch was at the top of the list when asked by my brother what I’d like to stop and see along the way. Whenever there is any subject that I know I’d really like to photograph I do a little recon. I search Flickr to see what pictures that others have posted. I study the shots, I look through all of the angles and perspectives to see what I find the most pleasing to the eye or even what I’d like to mimic. Now as a “Photographer” I understand that it is my job to capture these moments in the way I see them to give a unique and artistic perspective. But let’s be honest, I’m still learning a lot. And just like children learn to write cursive by copying the alphabet and writing their names over and over, I will attempt to mimic a photograph that I see on Flickr.

Following my research, I felt ready to arrive with tripod in hand and camera set to RAW with a blank 16gb memory card. Well, when I arrived, I arrived after dark. I had soon realized that the potential weather conditions were not a factor in my preparation. I walked into complete darkness and 15mph winds at 20 degrees F. In case you didn’t know, I am from Los Angeles and am not a fan of the cold. I wanted to just leave. But this was Cadillac Ranch! I’ve wanted to shoot here ever since I picked up my dslr 3 years ago. Sure these weren’t the optimal conditions for me to photograph in, but when was I going to be in Texas again?

I set up the tripod and set the exposure to between 10-15sec. I stayed out there as long as my body would allow (which totalled to about :30). In jeans, Chuck Taylors, and a thermal I was freezing from head to toe. Just take a look at all of the ice on the ground in the pictures……

Road Trip

This past week I hopped on a plane to Virginia to hang out with my big brother. He was going to be driving to Los Angeles with a few things to put in storage while he is being stationed overseas for the next few years. Once I realized that I could get the time off from work, I immediately booked a ticket. While on the road, we were able to make quite a few stops along the “historic route 66″ to see the sights and take lots of pictures. We saw Cadillac Ranch, the Wigwam Motel, the Blue Swallow Motel, the Grand Canyon and the St Louis Arch. I will be posting pics from the trip throughout the week.
